Orthodontic Options for the Whole Family
Your First Orthodontic Appointment
Welcome to your first orthodontic appointment – an exciting step towards achieving your best smile! Here’s what you can expect during your initial consultation at Great Florida Smiles & Orthodontics.
What to Expect at Your First Visit
Your first visit is a great opportunity to learn about our treatments and services. Plan to spend about an hour with us so we can ensure you have ample time to ask questions and discuss your concerns. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by one of our friendly receptionists or patient coordinators, who will collect some initial information and guide you through our office.
Diagnostic Work and Examination
The first visit involves some essential diagnostic work to assess your orthodontic needs. Here’s what happens:
- Photographs: We’ll take regular photographs of your teeth in their current state to get a clear visual record.
- X-rays: Radiographic (X-ray) images will be taken to examine what’s happening beneath the gums, including the position and growth of bones and joints, and any teeth that are still below the gum line.
- Impressions: In some cases, we may take an impression (mold) of your teeth to create an exact replica of your bite. This involves biting down on a soft, putty-like material for a few moments.
Comprehensive Examination
After the diagnostic work, it’s time for the exam. Our orthodontist will thoroughly examine your mouth and may ask questions about your jaw movement, chewing, or swallowing to gather more information for an accurate diagnosis.
Creating a Treatment Plan
A significant part of your first visit is determining the right treatment plan to address any issues found. We’ll discuss whether treatment should begin immediately or at a later time, depending on the developmental stage of your teeth and jaws. Sometimes, periodic checkups may be recommended until it’s the right time to start treatment.
Discussing Your Treatment Options
Following the exam, we’ll review your treatment options with you. This is the perfect time to ask any questions you may have about the process. Topics to consider include:
- How can orthodontic treatment benefit me (or my child)?
- What procedures will be used to correct the problem?
- Are there any options available for my treatment?
- Should treatment begin now, or is it better to wait?
- Will tooth extraction be necessary?
- How long will the treatment take?
By the end of your first visit, you’ll have a clear understanding of how we can help you achieve the best possible smile.
